‘Watertanden’ is an intransitive verb. Most of the time the finite form of ‘watertanden’ is not used. It’s more common to say ‘daar moet ik van watertanden’ or ‘het doet mij watertanden’. The main translation given above reflects the latter use better. I couldn’t find a direct translation of the verb.

A common expression is: ‘Het is om van te watertanden’ (“it’s mouthwatering”).

- “Als ik naar één van die kookprogramma’s op tv kijk, begin ik spontaan te watertanden!” 
(“When I watch one of those cooking shows on television, my mouth starts watering just like that!”)

- “Let maar niet op de hond hoor, die komt altijd heel zielig naar ons kijken als wij zitten te eten. Soms zit ie wel een half uur te watertanden bij de tafel!” 
(“Never mind the dog, he always comes and looks at us with sad eyes when we’re having dinner. Sometimes he sits near the table for half an hour with his mouth watering!” Note the use of ‘ie’, it is informal for ‘hij’ and the clue that the dog is male. When female, we would use ‘ze’ instead.)

- “Oòò moet je die taarten in de etalage zien, echt om van te watertanden! O en die bonbons! Lekker!!! Kom we kopen er een paar!” – “Zou je dat wel doen Sander, je begint steeds meer een buikje te krijgen!“ 
(“Ooh, check out those pies in the display window, it’s really mouthwatering! Oh and those chocolates! Tasty! Come, let’s buy a few!” – “Are you sure you want to do that Sander, you are really starting to develop a bit of a belly!”)

- Likkebaarden: to lick one’s lips (when thinking about food) [verb] [likkebaardde, gelikkebaard]. A ‘baard‘ is a ‘beard’ in Dutch.
- Trek: appetite [noun] [de trek, <no plural>]. Often used with ‘hebben’, e.g. ‘ik heb trek’: I’m feeling peckish.
- Knorren (van de maag): rumbling/grumbling (of the stomach) [verb] [knorde, geknord].

When you really should not be spending any money but still do, you can tell those who are concerned that ‘geld moet rollen’: money is there to be spent. The phrase can also be used more formally to say that in order to support the economy you must keep the money moving.

- “Ze zeggen dat geld moet rollen, maar dan moet je wel eerst inkomen hebben!” 
(“They say that money is there to be spent, but that does require one to have income to begin with!”)

- “Deze keer trakteer ik, jij hebt vorige keer betaald, weet je nog?” – “Ah joh, dat maakt me niks uit; geld moet rollen, toch??” 
(“This time it’s my treat, you paid last time, remember?” – “Oh I don’t care about that; money is there to be spent, right??”)

- “Nikki, pas je op dat je niet te snel je geld uitgeeft? Anders haal je misschien het einde van de maand niet!” – “Ach, als het op is, is het op! En dan zie ik het dan wel weer. Ik vind dat geld moet rollen!” 
(“Nikki, be careful and don’t spend your money too fast. Otherwise you may not make it to the end of the month!” – “Oh well, when it’s gone it’s gone. And then I’ll deal with it when time comes. I believe that money is there to be spent!”)

- “Vind je het gek dat het slecht gaat met de economie als iedereen de hand op de knip houdt. Geld moet rollen, zeker in deze tijden!” 
(“It’s not surprising that the economy is going bad when nobody is spending any money. You must keep the money moving, especially in these times!”)

Expressions:
- “Geld over de balk gooien/smijten”: to waste money. Lit. “to throw money over the beam”.
- “Geld laten rollen”: to spend money freely.
- “Veel geld stukslaan”: to spend money lavishly.
- “De hand op de knip houden”: to not spend any money / to deliberately live on a tight budget. I believe ‘knip’ refers to the traditional locking mechanism (see picture).
- “Geen cent te makken hebben”: to be broke / to hardly have any money.

I quit my job end of April and as a result I am officially ‘werkeloos’: unemployed. You may also encounter ‘werkloos’ which means the same thing. I think ‘werkeloos’ is more common in daily speech. Note that the latter can also mean ‘without action / not operating’.

In DWOTD Voetstuk I covered the song ‘Over de Muur’ by the 80s band ‘Klein Orkest’. They also had a song about being unemployed which we will cover below. In the song ‘Koos Werkeloos‘ the character ‘Koos Werkeloos’ sings about being unemployed and that he is actually quite happy with the situation. Dutch people who are old enough may refer to this song by calling somebody who is unemployed ‘Koos Werkeloos’. The lyrics have some interesting Dutch expressions to take note of.

The literal translation of ‘de één zijn dood is de ander zijn brood’ is ‘the death of one, is the bread of another’. It is used when there is a case of somebody profiting from somebody else’s misfortune.

- “Ik heb mijn iPod Touch in het vliegtuig laten liggen.” – “Dat is balen, maar je hebt wel een ander blij gemaakt.” – “Ja, ja, ik weet het, de één zijn dood is de ander zijn brood etc.”  
(“I left my iPod Touch on the plane.” – “That’s unfortunate, but then again, you did make somebody else happy.” – “Yeah, yeah, I know, one man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity and all that…”)

- “Er zijn mensen die hun brood verdienen met wapenhandel, dat is bijna letterlijk een geval van ‘de één zijn dood is de ander zijn brood’.” 
(“There are people who earn their living with arms trade, that’s almost literally a case of ‘de één zijn dood is de ander zijn brood‘.” Note the other expression with ‘brood’: ‘je brood verdienen met’.)

- “Door de crisis heeft één van de twee groenteboeren bij ons in de buurt zijn deuren moeten sluiten. Maar je ziet weer dat de één zijn dood de ander zijn brood is, want met die andere zaak gaat het nu plotseling weer heel goed!” 
(“One of the two greengrocer’s shops in our neighbourhood has had to close down due to the (financial) crisis. But it is once again illustrated that one man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity because the other shop is suddenly doing very well again!” Note that a ‘boer’ is a ‘farmer’ in Dutch, however it is also used for a greengrocer’s (groenteboer) and for small cheese shops (kaasboer).)

‘Huisje-boompje-beestje’ symbolizes leading a nice and quiet conventional family life. You have a nice house (‘huisje’), a garden (‘boompje’) and probably a pet (‘beestje’). It is not necessarily a suburban life although the phrase is often used to imply exactly that. I don’t know why we use ‘boompje’ instead of ‘tuintje’ (with ‘tuin’ translating as ‘garden’), but this phrase may in fact be derived from the typical children’s drawing of a family, a house, a tree and a dog. Note that a pet is a ‘huisdier’ in Dutch (literally ‘house animal’) and not a ‘beestje’, see Related words below.

‘Huisje-boompje-beestje’ is often used as a pejorative, emphasizing the perceived boring aspect of living such a life. A related noun is ‘burgerlijk’: conventional, bourgeois. The epitome of ‘huisje-boompje-beestje’ is having a station wagon and living in a ‘Vinexwijk’, see Extra below.

- “Sander heeft zaterdag een keuken gekocht. Hij is nog nooit zo dicht bij huisje-boompje-beestje geweest!”

(“Mike! It’s been a long time since I last saw you! How are you doing man? Is that station wagon yours?” – “I’m doing fine! Yes, that car is mine; I have gone completely suburban, terrible isn’t it?”).

- Beest: animal, beast, bug [noun] [het beest, de beesten]. The diminutive is almost only used in the translation of ‘bug’ or ‘insect’.

Extra:
A word that has almost become a synonym for new housing development in the Netherlands is ‘Vinexwijk’. Not every new housing development area is a ‘Vinexwijk’ though. Vinex is short for ‘Vierde Nota Ruimtelijke Ordening Extra’, a (spatial planning) policy briefing note issued in 1991 detailing the designated areas in the Netherlands where massive new housing development were to be built. Well-known examples are ‘Ypenburg’ in The Hague and ‘Leidsche Rijn’ in Utrecht.

‘Smaak’ is the Dutch noun for ‘taste’ and is used in both the meaning of ‘taste for things’ and ‘taste of things’ (flavour). Sometimes it is said that ‘iemand heeft een goede smaak’: someone has good taste. Equally, one can say that ‘iemand heeft een slechte smaak’ (bad taste). Which is weird, because… ‘over smaak valt niet te twisten’ (one can’t argue about taste)!

Outside this phrase I think the verb ‘twisten’ is not used much. You may hear ‘redetwisten’ more often; see the Related words below.

Examples:
- “Ik heb me een paar ‘carrot jeans’ laten aansmeren in de Dieselwinkel, maar nu ik zie opnieuw aandoe vind ik het toch geen gezicht!” – “O, nou ik vind ze wel hip hoor! Maar ja, over smaak valt niet te twisten, en zeker niet over de smaak van de jeugd van tegenwoordig!” 
(“I let them talk me into buying a pair of carrot jeans at the Diesel store, but now that I try them on again I think they don’t look good on me at all!” – “Oh, well, I think they are pretty trendy! But then again, there is no accounting for taste, and definitely not for the taste of today’s youth!” Note the expression ‘het is geen gezicht’: it doesn’t look good at all / it’s a hideous sight / etc.)

- “Hou jij niet van soulmuziek? Nou, dan heb je echt geen smaak!” – “Hoezo heb ik dan geen smaak? Over smaak valt niet te twisten, weet je nog!” 
(“You don’t like soul music? Well, then you definitely have no taste!- “What do you mean I have no taste? There is no accounting for taste, remember?” A girl once told me I had no taste when I disapproved of the soul music that was played at a school party, after which we never interacted again.)

- “Hoe kun je nu niet van Italiaans eten houden? Je bent zeker zo’n stomme Hollander die alleen maar stamppot lust!” – “Zo hé, wat een vooroordelen! Ik hou er gewoon niet zo van; over smaak valt niet te twisten!” 
(“How can you not like Italian food? You are one of those stupid Dutchmen aren’t you, one that only likes ‘stamppot’!” – “My, what prejudice! I just don’t like it that much; there is no accounting for taste!” Technically, a Dutchman is a ‘Nederlander’ but when used derogatorily one often says ‘Hollander’.)

- “(Er is) voor ieder wat wils”: (there’s) something for anyone’s taste.

(“I prefer business attire but once in a while I also dress casually.” Note that in Dutch the word ‘casual’ in the context of clothing is in common use. The proper Dutch word would be ‘vrijetijdskleding’: clothes one wears when not working (in your ‘free time’). Note that ‘nette kleren’ is not necessarily business attire, it can be any kind of ‘smart’ clothing.)

- Twisten: to argue, dispute, debate [verb] [twistte, getwist].
- Redetwisten: to argue, dispute [verb] [redetwistte, geredetwist]. This verb differs from ‘twisten’ in that it emphasizes that speech (‘rede’) is the medium.
- Discussiëren: to argue, debate [verb] [discussieerde, gediscussieerd].

‘Haasten’ is a ‘wederkerend werkwoord’: a reflexive verb. So the proper way to say it is: ‘zich haasten’. There is also a regular form of ‘haasten’ which can for example be used when you are rushing somebody else, but is is not as common. Common related nouns are ‘haast’ and ‘spoed’, see below.

Some people are fundamentally against ‘haasten’ and have been promoting the opposite of ‘haasten’ as a lifestyle: ‘onthaasten’. This verb is not reflexive and translates as ‘to slow down (in life in general)’.

Examples:
- “Ik heb me vandaag de hele dag moeten haasten, vanavond plof ik neer op de bank en ik kom er niet meer vanaf!” 
(“I have had to hurry all day long, tonight I’m going to crash on the couch and I will not get off it again!”)

- “Je moet je niet de hele tijd zo haasten; dat is niet goed voor je hart!” 
(“You shouldn’t be rushing all the time; it’s not good for your heart!”)

- “Al dat gehaast van jou! Ik hoef me nooit te haasten! Weet je wat de truc is? Vijf minuten eerder opstaan!” – “Jij hebt makkelijk praten! Ik ben namelijk vijf minuten te laat geboren!” 
(“All this rushing of yours! I never have to hurry! Do you want to know the trick? Get up five minutes earlier!” – “That’s easy for you to say! As a matter of fact, I was born five minutes too late!” Lit. “You have easy talking!”)

- “We moeten ons haasten want anders wordt het te druk op de weg. Heb je alles wat je nodig hebt?” – “Als ik jou maar heb schatje, dan ben ik gelukkig!” – “Bah, mag ik een teiltje?”  
(“We have to hurry, because it will get too busy on the roads otherwise. Do you have everything you need?” – “As long as I have you baby, then I’m happy!” – “Ugh, can I have a bucket to vomit in?” A ‘teiltje’ is actually a relatively small basin or washing-up bowl. The expression ‘mag ik een teiltje’ is jokingly used when somebody says something that is about to make you vomit (figuratively).)

- “Haastige spoed is zelden goed”: haste makes waste.
- “Van hot naar her”: to and fro / back and forth / hither and tither.

- Gehaast: hurried, hasty, in a hurry [adjective/adverb].
- Onthaasten: to slow down, to lower the pace [verb] [onthaastte, onthaast].

‘Doe me een lol’ is used colloquially. You can use it positively to say ‘do me a favour’ (or a positive ‘give me a break’), but you can also use it when annoyed in which case it means something like ‘give me a break!’ or ‘knock it off!’. The noun ‘lol’  in general translates as ‘fun’.

The more formal equivalent of ‘doe me/mij een lol’ is  ’doe mij een plezier’ or ‘doet u mij een plezier’ and this form is more often used in a positive way. There are also expressions with the diminutives ‘lolletje’ and ‘pleziertje’; see Expressions below.

Examples:
- “Doe me een lol en zet deze vuilniszak even buiten.” – “Doe het lekker zelf, ik ben je slaafje niet!” 
(“Help me out will you and take the trash/waste outside.” – “Why don’t you do it yourself, I’m not your slave!” Lit. ‘” …put the trash bag outside.” The diminutive ‘slaafje’ is used in case one feels misused to do small chores.)

- “Doe me een lol en zet die muziek wat zachter; sommige mensen proberen hier te werken, ja?!” 
(“Do me a favour and turn down that music; some people are trying to work here, OK?!”)

- “Alsjeblieft? Alsjeblieft, doe me een lol en zeg het niet tegen mijn ouders! Dan krijg je van mij ook een pakje sigaretten! Deal?” – “Ok, ik zal niks zeggen maar dan wil ik naast het pakje sigaretten ook een nieuw iPhonehoesje!” 
(“Please? Please, give me a break and don’t tell my parents! Then I’ll get you a pack of cigarettes too! Deal?” – “OK, I won’t say a thing, but I also want a new iPhone sleeve in addition to the pack of cigarettes!”)

Expressions:
- “Doet u mij een plezier en …”: please do me a favour and … .
- “Voor de lol”: just for the fun of it / just for fun / for a laugh.

Example:
- “Wat heb je gedaan gisteren?” – “O, we zijn naar Oudewater geweest.” – “Heb je daar familie of zo?” – “Nee, we zijn voor de lol geweest.”
(“What did you do yesterday?” – “Oh, we went to Oudewater.” – “Do you have relatives there or something?” – “No, we went just for fun.”)

- “Dat is geen lolletje/pleziertje”: that’s no fun at all / that is not pleasant at all.

It’s been one of those weeks in which you don’t have time for anything and at home things are piling up and it’s turning into a mess! Today I finally had time to clean up (a bit). When a room is tidy and in good order, in Dutch we say it’s ‘netjes’.  So, ‘opgeruimd staat netjes’ says something like ‘cleaned up looks neat/tidy’. You use the phrase to state/emphasize that cleaning up is a good thing, since the result is that everything looks ‘netjes’. (Note that in this phrase the verb ‘staan’ translates as ‘looks’ or ‘makes one/something look’.) The phrase is also often used when you finally succeed in getting rid of somebody

‘Netjes’ can also apply to the way one is dressed, e.g. ‘je ziet er netjes uit’ (which translates as ‘you look smart’), or ‘netjes gekleed zijn’ (to be smartly dressed).

Examples:
- “Bed opgemaakt, was gedaan, afwasmachine ingeruimd en aangezet: opgeruimd staat netjes!”

(“Did you hear they finally fired Frank?” – “Yes, good riddance to him is what I’d say, that guy never did more than the bare minimum.” Note that the expression ‘de kantjes er vanaf lopen’ implies that the effort delivered is in fact insufficient. ‘Kant’ means ‘side’ in Dutch and the expression originally meant that you were avoiding work, always staying on the side.)

- “De verkrachter is veroordeeld tot 10 jaar cel. Het publiek dat aanwezig was bij de veroordeling reageerde met een ‘opgeruimd staat netjes’.” 
(“The rapist was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The audience that was present during the sentence responded with a ‘good riddance to him’.”)

- “Ben je wel eens bij haar thuis geweest? Van ‘opgeruimd staat netjes’ heeft ze nog nooit gehoord! Weet je wat ik denk? Ik denk dat zij aan verzamelwoede lijdt en niks kan weggooien!”
(“Have you ever been to her house? She has clearly never heard of “that’s done and dusted”! Do you know what I think? I think she suffers from collector’s mania and is unable to throw anything away!”)

- “Het staat je netjes!”: This literally says “it looks good on you”, but is often used ironically so say that whatever you did or are doing does not look good on you at all.

The Dutch adjective for ‘precise’ is ‘precies’. It can also be used in the meaning of ‘exact(ly)’ or ‘accurate’. A common, but now old-fashioned name for men is Piet. Often when talking about the random average man, one talks about ‘Jan met de pet‘ or ‘Jantje en Pietje’. Although originally ‘Pietje’ thus refers to a man, a ‘pietje-precies’ is the general informal term for people who are sticklers for accuracy (like me ).

(“Sander is a real stickler for accuracy, sometimes it’s plain annoying.” Note that you sometimes encounter a noun derived from an adjective in Dutch, e.g. ‘het irritante’. This is best translated as ‘the annoying part/bit’. You often see it used in the form: ‘het irritante eraan is…’: ‘the annoying part of it is…’ or ‘what makes it annoying is…’. When something is ‘op het [...] af’ it means that it ‘is bordering [...]‘.)

- “Zie je hoe netjes hij zijn bureau heeft opgeruimd, alles ligt evenwijdig aan elkaar. Hij wordt al net zo’n pietje-precies als zijn vader.” – “Hmm, ik weet niet of je daar nu zo blij mee moet zijn…” 
(“Do you see how neatly he has cleaned up his desk, everyting is laid out in parallel. He’s already becoming the fussbudget his father is.” – “Hmm, I’m not so sure you should be happy about that…”)

- “Als je bruggen ontwerpt moet je wel een beetje een pietje-precies zijn; de kleinste afwijking kan de grootste gevolgen hebben!” 
(“When you design bridges you have to be a bit of a stickler for accuracy; the smallest deviation can have the biggest consequences!”)

Expressions:
- “Volgens de regels”: according to the rules.
- “Volgens het boekje”: by the book.

- “Het moet bij hem altijd volgens het boekje gaan, er is geen enkele ruimte voor creativiteit!”
(“He always wants things done by the book, there is zero opportunity for creativity!” Lit.: “It must always go by the book with him, there is no room at all for creativity.”).
