Bijhouden Most of the time you will encounter "bijhouden" in the meaning of "to keep up with" or "to keep up to date" (to maintain). A third translation is "to hold something near something else", e.g. "Houd je bord bij de pan, dan schep ik op." "to hold out/up to", e.g. "houd je bord bij" ('hold out your plate'), but nobody really uses that 🙂

("I try to keep a diary, but usually I do not have time for it!")

– "De laatste tijd hebben Sander en Marc moeite om de DWOTD-blog goed bij te houden."

– "Laatst ben ik wezen hardlopen met Sabina, nou ik kon haar echt niet bijhouden!" 
("The other day I went running with Sabina, my, I could hardly keep up with her!")

– "Ik word geacht mijn vakgebied zelf bij te houden, maar als ik dat doe haal ik niet het verplichte aantal productieve uren!" 
("I am supposed to keep up with my subject (matter expertise), but if I do so I will not make the required/mandatory number of productive hours!")

– "We moeten wel de stand bijhouden want anders weten we niet wie er gewonnen heeft!" 
("We do have to keep count / the score, (because) otherwise we will not know who has won!")

– "Ik volg een cursus Japans maar ik kan het maar met moeite bijhouden!" 
("I follow a course in Japanese but I can hardly keep up!")

Expressions:
– "De aandacht erbij houden": to keep focussing, to remain focussed/concentrated.

Example:
– "Ik kon vandaag de aandacht er echt niet bij houden, er was te veel afleiding!"
("I was unable to focus today, there was too much distraction!").
