  1. Hi, just wondering how, if at all, this word relates to the word ‘dodelijk’ which i believe means deadly or fatal?

  2. Hi Mike,
Although only differing by one vowel, there is no relation between the words “duidelijk” and “dodelijk”. Note that there is even a third vowel variation: “dadelijk” (immediately, directly).
So you could for example say:
“Dadelijk valt er een duidelijk dodelijke bom.”
(“Very soon a clearly deadly bomb will fall.”)

  3. The similarity is due to the fact that ‘-elijk’ is such a long suffix. ‘duidelijk’ is derived from the verb ‘duiden’ which means ‘to clarify’ or ‘to point out’. Similarly, ‘dodelijk’ is derived from ‘doden’ (to kill) or ‘dood’ (dead). ‘Dadelijk’ is derived from ‘daad’ (act).
