‘Pauze’ is the general word for a break or intermission. In sports however, half-time (or interval) is called ‘rust’. In case of the latter, one is actually resting, whereas ‘pauze’ does not necessarily imply that you deserve a rest 🙂

Examples:
– “Mensen, we houden een kwartier pauze, kwart voor twee weer hier verzamelen!” 
(“People, we take a fifteen minute break, reconvene here at a quarter to two!”)

– “Ik ben nu even druk, vraag het me in de koffiepauze, dan heb ik tijd.” 
(“I’m busy right now, aks me in the coffee break, I will have time then.”)

– “Werktijden zijn van 8:00 tot 17:00, met ‘s ochtends en ‘s middags een koffiepauze.” 
(“Working hours are from 8 AM to 5 PM, with coffeebreaks in the morning and afternoon.” Note that in the Netherlands we don’t use AM and PM but add ” ‘s ochtends ” or ” ‘s middags ” or use 24-hour notation.)

– “Omdat het zulk warm weer is, lassen we om drie uur een extra pauze in.” 
(“Because it is such warm weather, we introduce an extra break at three.”)

– “Tijdens de lunchpauze ga ik altijd even naar buiten want ik heb behoefte aan frisse lucht.” 
(“I always go outside for a bit during the lunch break, because I need fresh air.”)

– “De voorstelling duurt twee uur en heeft geen pauze.” 
(“The show lasts two hours and there is no intermission.”)

– “We zijn in de pauze weggegaan, wat een waardeloos optreden!” 
(“We left during the interval, what a lousy performance!”)

– “Wil je de film even op pauze zetten, dan schenk ik wat te drinken in.” 
(“Please pause the film, I’ll pour us a drink.” Lit. “Will you put the film on pause…” Note that ‘inschenken’ is used for any type of drink, not necessarily alcohol.)

– “Neem even pauze joh, je zweet helemaal!” 
(“Why don’t you take a break, you are sweating all over!”)
