"Kaart" and its diminutive "kaartje" have specific meanings in Dutch, depending on context. It might be confusing but if you follow the examples you will do alright.

Examples:
– "De voetballer werd met een rode kaart van het veld gestuurd."
("The football/soccer player was sent off the field with a red card.")

– "In het digitale tijdperk komt het steeds minder vaak voor dat vakantiegangers de thuisblijvers een kaartje sturen."
("In the digital age it happens less and less that tourists send a postcard to the home front." Literally a "vakantieganger" is a "holiday goer" and a "thuisblijver" an "at home remainer".)

– "Het Lowlands festival is al uitverkocht, maar op de radio worden nog kaarten verloot."
("The Lowlands festival is already sold out, but tickets are raffled off on the radio.")

– "Zullen we naar de bioscoop gaan vanavond? Ik denk niet dat het nodig is om kaartjes te reserveren."
("Shall we go to the cinema tonight? I don’t think it is necessary to make a reservations for tickets.")

– "Thuis op de gang heb ik een kaart van Nederland hangen."
("In my corridor at home, I have a map of the Netherlands on the wall." Literally "I have a map hanging".)

– "Een wereldkaart geeft nooit de correcte verhoudingen weer, want je kunt een bol niet op het platte vlak afbeelden."
("A map of the world never reflects the correct ratio, since you cannot project a sphere onto a plane." Literally "onto a flat surface".)

– "Een navigatiesysteem is een uitkomst voor mensen die niet goed kunnen kaartlezen."
("A navigation system is a godsend for people who are bad at reading maps." Literally "who can’t read maps well.")

– "Meneer, hebt u voor mij de kaart? En is er ook een wijnkaart?"
("Sir, can I have the menu? And do you have a wine list as well?" Try to make the literal translation yourself.)

Expressions:
– "Van de kaart zijn": to be upset after an unpleasant experience. It indicates a state of despair or not knowing what to do.

Example:
– "Heb je het al gehoord van Sara? Ze is haar baan kwijt en nu
is ze helemaal van de kaart."
("Have you heard about Sara? She lost her
job and now she is very upset.")

– "Het is doorgestoken kaart": it is a frame-up, it has been pre-arranged.
– "Dat is geen haalbare kaart": that is not a workable proposition, that cannot be realised.
