Toekomst

"Toekomst" is composed of "toe" en "komst", which respectively translate to "to" and "coming/arrival". The "toekomst" is the time that is coming to us: the future.

Examples:

    Zou je niet beter kunnen zeggen:
    “Het is te verwachten dat…”
    Of: “Je zou kunnen verwachten…”
    (‘Het is de verwachting’, is meen ik wat minder goed Nederlands)

  2. Hi Matti,
    I agree with you that it does not sound natural in this case. I think that is because Sophia’s “future” is in fact implied to be the ‘not near future’.
    In the example, “Het is de verwachting dat mevrouw volgende week het ziekenhuis kan verlaten”, the use of ‘het is de verwachting’ sounds quite OK to me. But I think that has to do with the near future of ‘volgende week’.
    Anyways, I could be far off of course :-0
